What inspires you the most about crafts in Africa?
I’m inspired by the crafters themselves – seeing the ingenuity, imagination and work quality that’s available. It’s a thrill to see artists display original thinking using unusual materials and also using recycled or up-cycled materials.
What’s your ideal crafting day?
Hours and hours of undisturbed time to work on a project or play with new ideas, with some great coffee and chilled music.
What surprises you the most about crafts in South Africa?
The sheer number of talented people around. Ofen they are selling their wares on the side of the road or at the numerous markets we have and they have created masterpieces out of the most basic of materials.
What’s your number one crafts must do?
If you’re a crafter – contribute to the community through crafts. Crafts are a language that can bring people together and heal too. If you’re not a crafter then support local talent or take a class and enjoy learning a new skill.
